Community Development

The Community Development Department is responsible for planning and zoning, building permits and inspections, rental licensing, and housing and redevelopment programs.

Our goal is to coordinate and plan for all the different developments in Fridley including commercial, industrial and residential (both single family and multi-family). We promote commercial and industrial development to expand the job base with livable wage employment opportunities and to increase the tax base. We help with the marketing of vacant properties, build relationships with local businesses and work closely with the City Council and Fridley HRA to ensure a thriving community.

Planning and Zoning

Planning Division Mission Statement

To protect the investments of Fridley property owners by fairly and equitably interpreting and enforcing Federal, State and City Codes, as they apply to use of a property.

Main Objectives

The Planning Department has 6 main objectives:

  3. A property trained, consistent and efficient staff which utilizes current technologies and systems to provide excellence in customer service.
  4. A cooperative relationship with our surrounding communities and all levels of government.
  5. Sustainable businesses whose growth or new establishment in the City is supported and encouraged when their placement in the community meets zoning code requirements and is in the public's best interest.
