Superfund Sites

Background

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) manages the Superfund program to oversee the remediation of hazardous sites so that they can be redeveloped. Under the Superfund program, identified contaminated sites are added to the National Priorities List (NPL) for clean up.

Following successful remediation, sites are delisted from the NPL and can be safely reused. Due to the complex nature of environmental remediation, this process can often take multiple years and the collaboration of many partners including the EPA, state and local governments, and private developers.
