Neighborhood Programs

Block Captains

Fridley Block Captains provide an integral link between the Fridley Public Safety Department and the community. Block Captains serve as a strong foundation for building and maintaining Fridley's strong community-police partnership.

Fridley has many police officers who respond to calls for service and look after the city 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Even so, it is difficult for officers to know the rhythm of every neighborhood or the specific behavior patterns of who live there. This is where the role of Block Captains come into play. Block Captains often know who lives where, what vehicles frequent the area and when something seems out of sync.

What are Block Captains Responsible for?

A Fridley Block Captain is a resident who has a vested interest in making their neighborhood a safer place to live and is willing to share that interest with others by keeping their neighbors informed of Public Safety concerns. The main duty of a Block Captain is to be a community liaison between the residents, the neighborhood and the Fridley Public Safety Department. Many of Fridley's Block Captains learn about the various City departments, how they work and how they can assist with resolving quality of life issues. Fridley Block Captains also frequently choose to host a Night to Unite party.

A Block Captain is not expected to respond to suspicious situations or intervene when a disturbance occurs in the neighborhood. They do not have foot patrol duties, nor should they investigate crimes. Block captains are not expected to be available 24 hours a day.

Apply to Become a Block Captain

To become a Block Captain, fill out and submit the Fridley Block Captain Application. As a part of the application process, you will also be asked to fill out a background check consent form.

Neighborhood Watch

We need you to partner with us to help make Fridley a safe, friendly, vibrant and stable community. You make the difference!

Primary goals:

  • Build a partnership between the community and the police
  • Help police and citizens deal with issues by using problem-solving skills & techniques

Fridley neighborhoods are organized into 11 districts, and each district has 2 Neighborhood Resource Officers. The NRO is a familiar face in the neighborhood, a connection to the Fridley Police Department, and is able to assist you in developing long term solutions to neighborhood problems.

Note: In the event of an emergency or crime, or if you want to talk to an officer immediately, don't hesitate to call 9-1-1. All of our officers are willing to respond and help in any way that they can.

For more information on how you can get involved with Fridley's Neighborhood Watch program, contact the Fridley Police Division at 763-572-3626.

Be In-the-Know!

We offer a variety of ways to stay up-to-date on Police activity in your neighborhood, crime alerts and community events. Here is a partial list of ways you can get information:

District Officers

A District Officer is assigned to work with the citizens of each district to solve problems or concerts that may surface in their neighborhood. Our District Officers have been trained in problem-solving and are aware of various resources available to the community.

Citizens are encouraged to meet and get to know their District Officers. It is important to develop a trusting, working relationship prior to dealing with problems that may be identified in a neighborhood.

Your District Officers

Note: Many direct numbers listed below are voicemail only as officers spend much of their working hours in the field. Depending on shifts and schedules, these messages may not be immediately received. Please dial 9-1-1 in case of emergency or if you need to speak to an officer right away.

Fire Corps Volunteers

Fire Corps is meant for individuals who have a desire to serve in a capacity other than firefighting or emergency medical services. This opportunity is perfect for older adults with prior public service or anyone interested in learning more about emergency services and a passion to better our community.

Fire Corps members are issued a department uniform and equipment necessary to complete their volunteer work. No prior experience or training is necessary, though we look to utilize current skills and experience for a similar role within the Fire Division.
